Chapter One

Michael Brenner waited in the shadow of the school gym for Heidi to come out of the girls’ changing rooms. He’d heard she might like him, plus she was apparently a “sure thing”, which was exactly what he was looking for. Michael ran his hands through his blond hair and tried to strike a nonchalant pose against the wall as he heard girls’ laughter on the other side of the door.

Heidi stepped through the doors along with two other girls, but quickly detached herself when she noticed Michael.

“Hi.” She gave a coy smile.

Michael felt a rush of satisfaction; yes, she definitely liked him.

“Hey.” He gave her the cocky grin he had been practicing in the mirror. “Can I walk you to lunch?”

Heidi cast a look at her friends, motioning they should go on without her, and nodded to Michael.

“Let’s go this way.” He tried to coax her to walk around the building, taking the long route past the woods.

She looked thrilled. “Okay.”

Michael contained his own look of delight. Rory had been right about her.

“So how’s Gabriel enjoying Stage School?” she asked.

Michael’s grin faded. Why was everyone so interested in his older brother all the time? Couldn’t he talk to just one girl who wasn’t more interested in Gabriel than him? Yes, it was true that Gabriel had been considered the top hot property of Compass Court Boarding School for the last few years, but Gabriel had left now. He had taken a place at The London Acting Academy, just when Michael, who was a year younger, had decided to join him at Compass Court.

Michael had spent his first five years of secondary school at an all-boys grammar but had, at sixteen, decided that a school with girls would be a lot more fun!

Except that he’d been here for five months now, and so far it had not resulted in his seeing much action.

He’d turned seventeen in December and had started the new term after Christmas absolutely determined that this would be his year to get a lot of experience. The kind of experience you only got with girls.

“He’s fine.” He dismissed the subject of Gabriel as quickly as he could. “Let’s talk about you.” This was a tip he’d picked up from Nate, a friend of his brother. Nate had told him to learn about the girl if he wanted to get anywhere with her, and to act interested when she talked.

“What about me?” Heidi looked confused.

“I don’t know, what do you like?” This wasn’t going as smoothly as he’d hoped.

“What do I like as in at school? Or on TV? Or what?”

Michael exhaled in exasperation. “I don’t know, um, what’s your favourite colour?”

“Ooh, I think purple probably. My phone and my tablet are purple. But it’s not my favourite to wear; I think I look better in brighter colours, like more pink than purple, don’t you think? So what’s yours?”

He was about to say “Blue,” when he remembered he was supposed to be pretending to be interested in the same things as her.
